Attack is only option - Platt
Having been criticised at times last term for being too cautious, Roberto Mancini's men have taken a different approach since the start of the 2011/12 campaign. They have provided plenty of entertainment with their attacking style and are on course to break the Premier League goalscoring record, having netted 48 goals in just 14 games so far. Another five goals came in the weekend win over Norwich, and Platt says it became a conscious plan to beat teams as emphatically as possible back in August, when City hammered Tottenham 5-1 but Manchester United went even better by trouncing Arsenal 8-2. "When we beat Spurs at White Hart Lane and United went out and put eight past Arsenal, Roberto told the players that we can't take our foot off the pedal. We should go on and keep scoring," said City's first-team coach Platt. The likes of Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli and David Silva have been in sparkling form this season after taking time to adjust to their new surroundings last season, while Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri have made an instant impact after arriving this summer. With so many attacking players performing well, Platt believes City are right to play to their strengths and says it would be a mistake to be too defensive. He said: "Last year we did not have the characteristics of the players that we do now. "What Roberto has done this year is that he has gone on and added to it with Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri. "Edin Dzeko also came in during January. We have got the type of players on the field which mean we cannot actually play defensively because of the characteristics of the players. We don't really have a choice. "Once you get to this stage of the season and you have goalscorers on the pitch that already have 10 or more then they just want to carry on scoring. "The side took time to settle last year with new players coming in. The new ones that have come in this summer have hit the ground running." Platt says the belief in the side has come from what was achieved last season, adding: "I think winning the FA Cup and qualifying for the Champions League brings with it a mentality of winning, that you have done it."
