Atletico Madrid has signed Brazilian midfielder Elias Mendes on a 4 1/2-year contract.
Elias helped Corinthians to a third-place finish in the Brazilian league this season.
Elias told the Spanish sports daily AS that ''I am ready to play, I am in good shape because I have just played the Brazilian league.''
The 25-year-old player from Sao Paulo said that he ''preferred to play in midfield behind the attack.''

Elias could help fill the void left by Simao Sabrosa who is likely to be sold to Turkish club Besiktas, according to Atletico president Enrique Cerezo.
