Atletico Madrid have dismissed speculation suggesting they had offered to sell Diego Forlan to Real Madrid.

A report in Spanish sports daily Marca earlier this week claimed that Atletico were prepared to sell the Uruguayan to their local rivals for 18million euros (£15.2m) - about half of his buy-out clause.

It was alleged that the offer did not come directly from Atletico but through an authorised intermediary.

However, Atletico chairman Enrique Cerezo insists there is no substance in the story.

"Every time there is something, I have never had a problem talking about it," he said.

"In the case of Forlan, nothing happened, we don't know anything."

Forlan was linked with a move away from the club over the summer after enhancing his reputation with a fantastic World Cup, where he was voted player of the tournament.

He has made a disappointing start to the season and rumours have surfaced regarding a possible rift with manager Quique Sanchez Flores.

"There is no problem between Quique and Forlan," said Cerezo. "Their relationship is perfect. When (Forlan) starts scoring goals, no-one will say any more."
