Arsenal's Sagna breaks leg at Tottenham
Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna will be sidelined for about three months after the France international fullback sustained a broken fibula in his team's Premier League defeat at Tottenham on Sunday.
The French Football Federation said Sagna would undergo surgery on Monday and be replaced by Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy in the France squad for its upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers.
However, Arsenal did not confirm the need for surgery, saying only that Sagna will see ankle specialists on Monday to assess the extent of the fracture to his right leg.
''It is expected that Bacary will be out for approximately three months and a surgical procedure cannot be ruled out at this stage,'' Arsenal said on its website.
Sagna was carried off the pitch on a stretcher after falling badly in the 68th minute following Benoit Assou-Ekotto's challenge and was taken to hospital.
The injury in Arsenal's 2-1 loss at White Hart Lane comes at a bad time for both his club and national team.
Arsenal is struggling in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone, and has an inexperienced back up in Carl Jenkinson. France plays Albania on Oct. 7 and Bosnia-Herzegovina on Oct. 11 as it tries to secure a place at Euro 2012 from Group D.
