Arsenal: Lucas Perez The Remaining Question Merk

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Arsenal’s major signings this year are fitting in rather well. So much so, that Lucas Perez is the only remaining question mark in this squad.

Arsenal are coming together rather nicely with their new signings. We have already seen Granit Xhaka come in and establish himself. There is no reason to think that he isn’t one of the first names on the team sheet, especially after he capitalized on his opportunity against Watford. The Swiss fits perfectly with the scheme Arsenal has put together.

Shkodran Mustafi has yet to feature for the Gunners, but there is little doubt that he will be exactly what we needed. For starters, he came over already best of friends with Mesut Ozil and everyone has already been singing his praises. Plus, he is a World Cup winner, he had a good showing in the Euros and the world is pretty united behind the quality defender that he is.

Rob Holding has already established what he can do too. The 20 year old looked fully capable of manning that deputy role next to Laurent Koscielny, but now he will have to duke it out with Mustafi.

All three of these guys are essentially good to go. We know what we have and what they will provide.

It leaves Lucas. The next Gunner to take a stab at the No. 9 shirt. The next Gunner with the No. 9 shirt to not exactly be the bonafide, proven No. 9 that everyone wanted.

There are a lot of question marks surrounding Lucas. In a transfer window where Christian Benteke cost £30m, it’s only natural that questions are asked. Lucas only cost £17m, so can we expect another Danny Welbeck? Someone who could be a striker but may not be?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

It’s really hard to tell and it’s not like we can provide a definite answer until we have seen him, which may not be all that soon. We may not have seen Mustafi yet, but we know his quality. We don’t really know what Wenger has planned for Lucas. The Spaniard can also play out wide, so should we anticipate him to be switched out there to find playing time?

Only time will tell. But for what it’s worth, even Arsenal players have been ‘surprised’ by Lucas in training. Nacho Monreal has admitted his surprise at how well his countryman is doing and Mustafi has asserted that Lucas is a massive trouble for opposing defenses.

Yet between the number, the price tag, the track record, the age and who knows what else, until we see what Lucas can do, there will be doubt and there will most certainly be questions.
