Arsenal has opened an investigation to find out why hundreds of their supporters were delayed in getting to the Sao Paulo Stadium ahead of their team's 2-0 loss to Napoli in the Champions League.

Arsenal, which finished second in Group F and progressed to the knockout stage despite the loss, says the club will ''work out precisely what happened'' after fans complained of disorganization and rough treatment from police.

Arsenal had warned their fans to take extra care following previous problems with the Italian side's fans. Many supporters caught in traffic or delayed by congestion at the stadium entrance missed the kick-off.

The Premier League club says ''we are very disappointed for our fans that they had a difficult evening but the circumstances were beyond our control.''
