Velez Sarsfield held on to first place in the Argentina Clausura championship despite a 3-2 loss to Quilmes on Saturday.

River Plate, which could have taken over first place with a victory, also lost at home to Godoy Cruz 2-1.

Velez has 21 points to lead the standings. The victory for Godoy Cruz gave it 20 points and sole possession of second place. River has 19 in third place.

In other matches on Saturday, Banfield defeated Newell's 1-0, Independiente and All Boys drew 2-2 and Colon upended Estudiantes 2-0.

Velez took a 1-0 lead through Hector Canteros' looping header in the 39th minute. But Quilmes came back with three goals - one from Miguel Caneo in the 65th and two back-to-back scores from Pablo Vazquez in the 81st and 82nd. Agustin Vuletich scored in second-half injury time for Velez.

River Plate also took a 1-0 lead in the 37th when Jonathan Maidana scored on a header. But Godoy Cruz rallied with a close-in shot from Zelmar Garcia in the 48th and a free kick from Mariano Donda in the 85th to clinch the victory.

Banfield defeated Newell's on Jorge Achucarro's goal in the 58th minute and improved to 18 points to stay near the top of the standings. Newell's Old Boys is in last place with five points.

Independiente took a 2-0 lead on goals by Facundo Parra in the 41st and Roberto Battion in the 55th. All Boys rebounded to get the draw with goals from Sebastian Ereros in the 78th and Emanuel Gigliotti in the 81st.

Colon defeated Estudiantes on goals by Esteban Furetes in the 40th and Damian Diaz in second-half stoppage time. Both clubs have 17 points in 11 matches.

On Sunday it's: Arsenal vs. Gimnasia, Tigre vs. San Lorenzo, Huracan vs. Boca Juniors, and Argentinos vs. Racing. Lanus faces Olimpo on Monday.
