Estudiantes held on to first place in Argentina's Apertura tournament, taking advantage of Velez' 0-0 draw with Gimnasia on Sunday.

Velez would have retained the top spot with a victory.

In other games Sunday, Boca Juniors defeated Arsenal 2-1 in the first match under interim coach Roberto Pompei. Velez seldom put together a sustained attack, dropping two critical points to the leaders.

Boca's record-breaking striker Martin Palermo scored the winner in the 74th. Palermo said after the loss to River Plate that he was embarrassed how the status of Boca had fallen with so many losses over the last several seasons.

Sergio Araujo gave Boca a lead in the 27th with Arsenal's Lisandro Lopez equalizing in the 48th minute.

Gabriel Mercado and Enzo Perez scored in Estudiantes 2-0 victory on Saturday.

In a match played in the rain, Francisco Cerro gave last-place Quilmes a 1-0 lead in the 70th, which was erased two minutes later by Gabriel Hauche's goal.

Behind Estudiantes and Velez, Arsenal is in third place with 25 points and Godoy Cruz has 24.
