Juan Roman Riquelme was sent off in the closing minutes as Boca Juniors lost 2-1 at home against Rosario Central on Sunday to languish third from last in the Argentine Clausura tournament.

Milton Caraglio scored the 86th-minute winner in the Bombonera to break a 1-1 deadlock.

Boca's fierce rival River Plate is only slightly better off. Sebastian Blanco scored the winner for Lanus in the 41st minute, leaving River just a point ahead of Boca in 16th position.

Meanwhile, Godoy Cruz stayed within three points of Independiente at the top of the standings with a 2-0 home win over Velez Sarsfield, while 10-man Estudiantes lost ground after a 1-1 home draw with Banfield.

Central had Leonardo Carol Madelon making his debut as coach and the visitors took the lead against Boca when Adrian De Leon diverted Guillermo Burdisso's header into the net from a 44th minute corner.

Nicolas Gaitan equalized after Central goalkeeper Hernan Galindez failed to hold Riquelme's long-range shot in the 63rd, but Boca sank to a fifth defeat in 12 games after Caraglio headed the late winner from a free kick.

Television replays suggested referee Rafael Furchi was wrong to award the free kick, and Riquelme was shown a red card for disputing the decision.

Central, struggling to avoid relegation, moved to 11 points in the standings following the win.

Rodrigo Salinas and Cesar Carranza scored in a three-minute span in the second half as Godoy Cruz beat Velez Sarsfield and moved to 24 points.

Salinas scored the opener in the 72nd minute and Carranza beat goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero to the ball to finish a counter attack in the 74th.

The tournament's leading scorer Mauro Boselli opened the scoring for Estudiantes against Banfield with a header in the 15th minute but left the pitch injured before half time.

Marcelo Quinteros equalized for defending champion Banfield in the 41st minute but Estudiantes held on for a draw despite Enzo Perez' red card in the 70th.

Estudiantes dropped to fourth on 21 points following the draw.

In other results Friday and Saturday it was: Huracan 0, Colon 0; Newell's Old Boys 0, Tigre 2; Argentinos Juniors 2, Chacarita Juniors 1; San Lorenzo 0, Gimnasia 1; Independiente 1, Arsenal 0.

Friday's match between Atletico Tucuman and Racing Club was suspended because of rain.
