Anorthosis FC condemns firecracker attack
A Cypriot club has condemned fans who hurled a powerful firecracker at one of its players as he was receiving treatment from medical staff during a key league match.
Anorthosis Famagusta, which is currently tied with AEL Larnaca for first place, also denounced some of its own fans for lighting flares during Sunday's match against Omonia Nicosia.
The club urged police in a statement Monday to carry out more thorough checks of fans entering stadium grounds. Police said investigators are pouring over CCTV footage to track down the culprit.
Video footage shows trainers who were tending to injured Ricardo Laborde, as well as the Colombian forward himself, writhing on the ground after the firecracker exploded just inches from their faces.
Anorthosis said no one was seriously injured.
