U.S. international Oguchi Onyewu has joined Sporting Lisbon on a three-year contract.

Sporting football director Carlos Freitas announced late Tuesday the club negotiated a free transfer with AC Milan to bring the 29-year-old central defender to Portugal.

Onyewu, who made his debut for the United States in 2004 and played at the last two World Cups, was loaned from AC Milan to Dutch club FC Twente in January after failing to appear in a single game for the Italian club last season.

Sporting, once one of Portugal's top three clubs, is aiming to reverse years of decline.

It has won the Portuguese title just twice in the last three decades and ended last season 36 points behind champion Porto, though it will feature in next season's Europa League.
