FC Copenhagen says it has sold Brazilian striker Ailton Almeida to Cypriot club Apoel Nicosia.

The Danish club says the 25-year-old Almeida has signed a three-year contract with Apoel.

Copenhagen, which paid 22 million kroner ($3.8million) for the forward in 2007 and made him the highest paid player in the Danish Super League, did not reveal the transfer fee.

Almeida helped Copenhagen win the Danish league three times and scored 37 goals, but didn't fully meet expectations.

The club's sports director Carsten Jensen said Wednesday that the Brazilian had great talent, adding though that he was ''entertaining, but sadly not all the time.''
