Al Ahli has fired former Leeds and Aston Villa manager David O'Leary as its coach after less than one season in the UAE league.

The pre-season hiring of the former Ireland and Arsenal defender was part of a bid by the Dubai club to draw in larger crowds. It also signed former Juventus and Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro.

But the team has struggled to attract fans and is seventh in the league - winning only six of its 15 games this season.

Al Ahli media officer Fekry Ibrahim said Saturday that O'Leary and his assistant Roy Aitken were fired on Thursday. O'Leary has been replaced by interim coach Abdul Hamid Al Mistaki.
