Ajax bow to champions Twente
Twente won 2-0 at NAC Breda on Sunday to finish the season one point ahead of Martin Jol's side, who did their bit with a 4-1 success at NEC Nijmegen. Ajax put Twente under pressure until the end, finishing the season with 14 straight league wins in which they scored 50 and conceded three, but Twente held their nerve when it mattered. And the champions celebrated their first ever title with an open-top bus ride back to Enschede as supporters lined the side of the motorway and bridges to salute the players "At the end, we left points on the table this season. FC Twente are therefore the rightful champions", Demy de Zeeuw said on ajax.nl. Luis Suarez, who finished the season with 35 goals, added: "Twente are the rightful champions, and I congratulate them." Twente midfielder Theo Janssen paid tribute to McClaren's influence as the former England boss, who has now been linked in the German and English press with a move to German side Wolfsburg, restored a reputation that was left in tatters following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008. "This was not an easy season for me. The coach was behind me and has kept faith in me. That is very important to me," Janssen said on fctwente.nl. Bryan Ruiz, who opened the scoring against NAC with his 24th of the season, added: "This is really a dream come true. "This is my first season here and immediately we are champions." The win over NAC was striker Blaise Nkufo's last game for Twente before moving to Major League Soccer team Seattle Sounders this summer. "This is a really incredible way to end my time at Twente," said the Switzerland striker, who has been at the club for seven years. "The title did not fall from the sky. We got to this level step by step. Twente are just a very good team."
