Yost, Royals agree to one-year extension through 2016

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Royals manager Ned Yost said often in 2014 that he wasn't sure how much longer he preferred to manage in the big leagues beyond two more years.

And Yost reiterated that notion in a teleconference call Tuesday to discuss his one-year extension with the Royals that will keep him under contract through 2016.

So, what would make him want to manage beyond 2016?

"Well, as long as we're having success and as long as I'm able to go full steam (it could happen)," said Yost, who joined the teleconference call from a deer stand while hunting near his home in Georgia.

"We have a great organization to work with and great people. We'll see."

Yost, 60, added that he is eager to get back to the diamond with a group he feels will contend for a championship.

"We've got a real good core of players," he said. "I think we're in great shape going into (the season)."

Royals general manager Dayton Moore said he would have been open to a longer extension if Yost had been interested.

"(But) we pretty much came to the conclusion at the end of last season that it would be a one-year extension," Moore said. "... It was a pretty easy conversation. Ned wants to be here."

Yost led the Royals to their first postseason appearance since 1985 and brought the Royals to within one game of a world championship, falling in seven games to the San Francisco Giants.

Moore stressed the need to have Yost around at least two more seasons to continue to promote team chemistry.

"You always strive for organizational harmony," Moore said.

Yost became the first manager in major league history to win his first eight postseason games.

And Yost, who became the KC manager in May 2010, almost certainly will become the Royals' all-time winningest manager this season. He is third on the team's list with 373 wins, behind Whitey Herzog (410) and Dick Howser (404).

"Ned has done a terrific job," Moore said. "He (took over) at a time when we needed to be re-energized, and he did that."

Overall, Yost is 830-904 in 11 seasons as a manager in the big leagues, tying him for 73rd all-time.
