World's oldest runner? Guinness unsure
Guinness World Records says it does not have enough proof to credit British citizen Fauja Singh with becoming the oldest person to complete a marathon, after he made global headlines earlier this month for finishing a 26.2-mile event in Toronto at 100 years old.
Guinness World Records said Singh, who was born in India, had not provided the necessary documentation to prove his date of birth.
"Like everyone who read about Mr. Singh, we were amazed by such an inspirational achievement — to finish a marathon at such an old age is awe-inspiring," said Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday.
"However, we have yet to receive the documentary evidence that we need to confirm Mr. Singh as the world's oldest marathon runner.
"As much as we'd love to ratify this record, we simply don't have the proof.
"The claim will remain open until such evidence is provided — until then, we wish Mr. Singh all the best with his next challenge."
Singh completed the Oct. 16 run in eight hours, 11 minutes and 5.9 seconds and said at the time the feat was "like getting married again."
"He's absolutely overjoyed, he's achieved his life-long wish," his coach and translator Harmander Singh said.
