The Coyotes recalled forward Nick Johnson from the team's AHL affiliate in Portland on Friday following an announcement that center Matthew Lombardi is expected to be out "indefinitely" with an unspecified upper-body injury.

The 27-year-old Johnson, signed by the Coyotes as a free agent in the offseason, had a career-high eight goals and 18 assists last season with the Wild. Primarily a winger, Johnson has appeared in two games with the Pirates this season and five games with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL.

Lombardi was hurt in the Coyotes' loss to the Sharks on Thursday night.
