Wings assign Marchenko to Grand Rapids
Defenseman Alexey Marchenko's season isn't over yet. The Red Wings today assigned him to their top farm club in Grand Rapids, where the Griffins are competing in the first round of the American Hockey League's Calder Cup playoffs.
Marchenko, 23, played in three of the seven games against Tampa Bay, including the series-deciding loss Wednesday. In 13 regular-season games with the Wings this season, he had a goal and two points.
Marchenko is expected to be in the lineup Saturday at Van Andel Arena when the Griffins strive to extend their best-of-five playoff series against the Toronto Marlies to a deciding fifth game on Sunday. Grand Rapids lost the first two games of the series in Toronto.
Several other Wings could also extend their hockey seasons if they choose to accept invitations to play for their respective countries at the World Hockey Championships, which were scheduled to get under way today in Prague, Czech Republic.
