Wildcats land highly touted QB Solomon
Rich Rodriguez landed his apparent quarterback of the future on Sunday,
securing a commitment from Las Vegas Bishop Gorman standout Anu Solomon.
Solomon,
rated by Scout as a three-star prospect and the No. 31 quarterback
nationally but rated by some other services as high as the No. 4 QB in
the country, is considered a dual-threat prospect and is headed into his
fourth year as the starting quarterback at the perennial Nevada
powerhouse. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder completed 65 percent of his passes
last season for 2,770 yards with 41 touchdowns and two interceptions,
and he ran 57 times for 402 yards and six scores. Solomon has a career
record of 43-3 as a starter.
Arizona's starting job will be up
for grabs in 2013 following the graduation of fifth-year senior Matt
Scott, the only experienced quarterback on the roster. Rodriguez moved
receiver Richard Morrison to quarterback in the spring to add depth at
the position, as freshmen Javelle Allen and Josh Kern -- neither of whom
arrives with the prep track record or recruiting hype of Solomon --
won't be on campus until the fall. Recent junior-college transfer B.J.
Denker also will be eligible to play this year.
Solomon visited
Tucson last month and also held offers from most of the Pac-12 schools
-- including Arizona State -- as well as Wisconsin and Purdue, among
others.
Following his commitment, he told the Las Vegas Sun, "I
feel like Arizona is the right place for me. I am comfortable with
(committing early)."
