ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild started a potentially busy weekend by securing some of the organization depth it covets.
Minnesota announced Friday it signed defenseman Steven Kampfer to a one-year, two-way contract. The two-way contract allows the Wild to send Kampfer up-and-down from its minor-league team in Iowa next season.
Kampfer, 24, spent the 2012-13 season playing for Minnesota's farm team, the Houston Aeros, in the American Hockey league where he had four goals and 17 assists in 55 games for Houston. He led the team's defensemen with 132 shots on goal during the regular season. Kampfer had a goal and an assist in five playoff games for the Aeros.
Kampfer, acquired from the Boston Bruins for defenseman Greg Zanon on Feb. 27, 2012, played in 13 games for Minnesota in the 2011-12 season and had two goals and an assist. An original fourth-round draft pick by Anaheim, Kampfer has seven goals and eight assists in 61 career NHL games.
Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher has talked about potentially being active on the trade market this weekend with the NHL Draft on Sunday.
