WIAA D-7: Black Hawk tops Glenwood City to cap unblemished season
MADISON, Wis. -- Black Hawk used a punishing ground game and a quick-strike offense to complete an unblemished, 14-0 campaign with a 44-22 win over Glenwood City on Thursday morning at Camp Randall Stadium.
Quarterback Heath Butler helped spur Black Hawk to victory by filling the stat sheet to the tune of 126 yards passing, with two scoring strikes and 94 yards rushing and one touchdown on the ground. The Warriors were also greatly aided by Tanner Sweeney's two rushing scores and Tyler Peterson's 3 receptions for 38 yards and one touchdown.
Thursday's victory marked the Warriors' first-ever state title. Glenwood City, which got 151 rushing yards from star Isaac Tuttle Thursday, finished its season 12-2 overall.
TURNING POINT
Black Hawk came out of the halftime break with its guns blazing, promptly scoring on a pair of lengthy plays in the second half's first few minutes. First, Sweeney produced a 65-yard scoring jaunt. Then, Brett Lovelace hauled in a 65-yard scoring pass down the seam after finding himself wide open in the secondary. After that flourish, Black Hawk owned a decisive, 38-14 lead.
THREE STARS
• Tanner Sweeney, Black Hawk -- Sweeney's punishing runs proved key for the Warriors. He ran with power and also showed an impressive burst once he reached the second level of Glenwood City's defense. Sweeney totaled 146 rushing yards on the day.
• Isaac Tuttle, Glenwood City -- Tuttle ripped off an impressive, 68-yard scoring romp late in the first quarter that gave the Hilltoppers renewed life, making the score 14-6 in favor of Black Hawk at the time. He ended with 151 yards on 18 carries.
• Heath Butler, Black Hawk -- Butler piloted the Warriors' offense smoothly, showing the ability to slither for yards on sneaks while also displaying a solid arm on deep balls when necessary. He went 6-for-7 passing.
