NEW YORK -- Jim Whitesell, the associate head coach at Saint Louis University for the past two years, has been hired as an assistant coach at St. John's.

Red Storm coach Steve Lavin said Monday that Whitesell, who has 24 years' experience as a head coach at the Division I, II and III levels, would replace Darrick Martin as an assistant. Martin, in his second year at St. John's, takes over as the program's director of operations.

Before being hired at Saint Louis by the late Rick Majerus, Whitesell was the head coach at Loyola, Ill. for seven seasons, compiling 109 victories, including 21 in 2006-07, the program's first 20-win season since 1985. He was the head coach at Division II Lewis University (Ill.) (1992-2004) and Division III Elmhurst College (Ill.) (1987-92).
