West Virginia coach: Sooners QB Baker Mayfield is a ballplayer
Baker Mayfield has been a surprise to most so far this season.
The Oklahoma quarterback is at the top of most national rankings with his 1,000-plus yards passing, 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
"Yeah, man," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said during his weekly teleconference. "He's a ballplayer. "We didn't play against him when he was at Texas Tech, but we watched all his games so we knew he was a pretty good player a couple years ago."
Mayfield went from walk-on to starter at Tech before doing the same after transferring to Oklahoma.
Mayfield ranks second in the country in points per game (28.0) and is third in total offense, getting more than 400 yards per game.
"He's an exciting guy that understands this type of offense," Holgorsen said. "He's done some good things."
OU takes on West Virginia in Norman, Okla., at 11 a.m. Saturday.
