Welker joins Kentucky Derby trail
Black Onyx and Undrafted, co-owned by Denver Broncos receiver Wes Welker, lead the list of 13 late nominees for the Triple Crown series for 3-year-olds.
Black Onyx won the $550,000 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park last weekend for trainer Kelly Breen. Undrafted finished third in the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park for Welker, who owns the colt trained by Wesley Ward.
Among the other late nominees is Giant Finish, third in the Spiral for trainer Tony Dutrow; and Texas Heritage winner Departing and Gentilly Stakes winner Sunbean, both of whom are trained by Al Stall Jr.
That leaves the number of 3-year-olds nominated at 382. It cost $6,000 each to add a late nominee by last weekend's deadline.
The Triple Crown begins with the May 4 Kentucky Derby, followed by the Preakness on May 18 and the Belmont on June 8.
