Weaver making progress toward recovery
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Injured Angels pitcher Jered Weaver, sidelined as a result of tendinitis in his right shoulder, played catch Saturday afternoon and felt good, but there’s still no precise date for his return to the rotation.
The soonest he would pitch, manager Mike Scioscia said, would be Wednesday night against the Oakland A’s at Angel Stadium.
Weaver threw from a distance of about 90 feet and probably will throw again Sunday.
“He felt very good, so that’s encouraging,” Scioscia said before the Angels faced the Detroit Tigers. “We’re going to keep the progression and see how it is. No decision is made at this time, but it’s good news that he got out there and felt a nice, easy motion.”
Right-hander Dan Haren will pitch in Monday’s series opener against the A’s, but Scioscia has not announced who will take Weaver’s spot on Tuesday. The most likely candidates are Jerome Williams, Garrett Richards and Barry Enright, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday. Enright was 5-1 at Salt Lake after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 23.
If Weaver returns to the rotation on Wednesday, he would have five starts remaining in the regular season.
“More importantly than trying to keep Weav on any kind of schedule is how he feels these next two or three days,” Scioscia said. “That’s what’s going to be the determining factor.”
