Was, Lee win 500 sprints at World Cup meet

BERLIN (AP) Artur Was of Poland won the men's 500-meter sprint at a World Cup speedskating meet on Friday, while the women's race went to season leader Lee Sang-hwa of South Korea.

Was posted his first win of the season in 35.01 seconds to beat Laurent Dubreuil of Canada by 0.08 seconds. Michel Mulder of the Netherlands was third, while overall leader Pavel Kulizhnikov of Russia crashed.

Lee clocked 37.87 to beat Heather Richardson of the United States by 0.34 seconds. Lee has won four of five sprints this season. Margot Boer of the Netherlands was third.

Olympic champion Irene Wust of the Netherlands easily won her second 3,000-meter race of the season in 4 minutes, 1.55 seconds, ahead of teammate Marije Joling and Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic.
