Wainwright exits start vs. Brewers with ankle injury
Ace Adam Wainwright's night ended early following a scary-looking injury in the fifth inning at Milwaukee on Saturday night.
The Cardinals' right-hander stumbled coming out of the batter's box after he hit an infield pop-up and appeared to be barely capable of putting any weight on his left foot as he walked back to the dugout. He had been cruising along against the Brewers, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts in four shutout innings.
"You see him in between innings and it doesn't look good," outfielder Matt Holliday told Jim Hayes on the Cardinals Live postgame show. "Our prayers go out to him and his family. It's unfortunate. Obviously, one of my best friends and teammate, but we've got a lot of good players and we'll rally and go after it."
Wainwright won two of his first three starts and lowered his ERA to 1.57 in a team-high 25 innings of work before he left with a 2-0 lead against the Brewers. The Cardinals reported he suffered a left ankle injury and will be evaluated when he returns to St. Louis on Sunday.
Waino to get MRI on Monday. #stlcards aren't speculating, but haven't ruled out possible achilles injury.
