MANKATO, Minn. -- With Desmond Bishop nursing a sore groin and questions still remaining at linebacker, the Minnesota Vikings added some veteran depth on Tuesday by re-signing Stanford Keglar.
Keglar, 28, was with Minnesota during its offseason program, participating in the organized team activities. He was released when the Vikings signed Desmond Bishop after minicamp. But Bishop has missed the past three practices with a sore groin, perhaps leading to concern over the depth heading into Friday's first preseason game.
Minnesota released undrafted rookie linebacker Nathan Williams to make room for Keglar, who hasn't played in the NFL since 2010 with the Houston Texans. Williams had not participated in practices and was on the physically unable to perform list as he returned from offseason ankle surgery. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier had expected Williams to come off the PUP list soon.
Keglar was a fourth-round pick by the Tennessee Titans out of Purdue and played two seasons with the team. Last year, he played for the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League.
Minnesota defensive coordinator Alan Williams said he wasn't concerned about the depth at linebacker earlier Tuesday because of Bishop's absence.
"Not at all," Alan Williams said. "The good thing about this year is we have a lot of competitions, younger and with the vets. So, not at all. I wish he were getting the reps so we could see what he is and see how he was doing. You always have to take it for what it's worth. When guys are out, the next guys have to step in and play and compete. So that's what's going on then."
