Vikings activate RB Banyard
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- With former NFL MVP running back Adrian Peterson facing legal trouble, the Minnesota Vikings added another running back for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.
Peterson, Minnesota's all-time leading rusher, has already been declared inactive for Sunday's home game at TCF Bank Stadium. The team announced the deactivation on Friday after news broke that Peterson would be indicted in Montgomery County, Texas, on charges of injury to a child.
The Vikings signed Joe Banyard from the practice squad and waived fullback Zach Line. Banyard, 25, led Minnesota in rushing in the preseason, carrying the ball 36 times for 212 yards.
Banyard originally joined the Vikings as a practice squad player in 2012. He spent three weeks in 2013 on the active roster and had one catch for 11 yards. He hasn't had a carry in a regular-season game.
Matt Asiata will likely start in Peterson's place on Sunday, with rookie Jerick McKinnon splitting time with Asiata.
