PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks have signed veteran catcher Gerald Laird to a minor-league contract, and he'll be in the mix for a catching spot on the major-league roster.

Laird, 35, a Valley resident, has 12 years of major league experience and has played for four teams. He hit .204 with no home runs and 10 RBI in 53 games for Atlanta last season, his second with the Braves.

The D-backs have two catchers on their 40-man roster, starter Tuffy Gosewisch and Rule 5 pick Oscar Hernandez.
