VCU game notes recognize coach for outscoring LeBron

If you're a small program looking to differentiate yourself in the land of college basketball, no potential advantage should be overlooked -- especially if it involves LeBron James.

For that reason it is hard not to respect the VCU women's program for pointing out a fun fact about head coach Marlene Stollings, an Ohio native in her second season leading the Rams after a year at Winthrop.

This comes from the game notes the VCU sports information provided prior to the Rams' game at Ohio State on Thursday:

Stollings piled up all those points as a player at tiny Beaver Eastern in southeastern Ohio, and though she finished her career in 1993, she remains the all-time leading high school scorer in state history.

After beginning her career at Ohio State, Stollings transferred to Ohio, where she was an All-MAC player for the Bobcats and earned honorable mention All-America honors in 1998.

James, who played at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary from 1999-2003, is actually not the all-time leading scorer on the boys side, but that is kind of beside the point, right?

The Rams need something to brag about as they work on building themselves into a respectable Atlantic-10 program, and any legitimate reason to mention the NBA's most valuable player seems like a good one.

(Oh, and if you were wondering, James was third on Ohio's all-time scoring list when he played his last game for the Fighting Irish and he is currently fourth. Former Ohio State star Jon Diebler set the state record with 3,208 points at Upper Sandusky from 2003-07, besting the 2,958 scored by Jay Burson at New Concord John Glenn from 1981-95 and 2,680 of Geno Ford from Cambridge.)
