Vanderbilt University pitcher drowns in a fishing accident
Vanderbilt University freshman pitcher Donny Everett drowned in a lake while he was fishing on Thursday evening, police have confirmed.
According to WKRN, Everett was at Normandy Lake in Coffee County, Tennessee to fish with two teammates and two others when he attempted to swim across the lake.
The Clarksville, Tennessee native was named the 2015 Gatorade Tennessee Player of the Year and made his debut for the Commodores on April 12, 2016 with a scoreless inning against Middle Tennessee.
Vanderbilt spokesman Rod Williamson said the status of the team's NCAA Regional game against Xavier scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday has not yet been decided.
"As you can imagine, the team, the athletic department and the university are trying to come to terms with this tragedy," Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams said in a statement on Friday. "His parents and loved ones are on our minds and in our prayers as we share in their grief."
