Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton was given a day off Tuesday after suffering a jammed left thumb when he slid hard into second base attempting to break up a double play Sunday.
Upton clipped his thumb on the second base bag as he slid through the bag on Ryan Roberts’ ground ball to third with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. The Giants turned the double play to end the inning, but not before the D-backs scored their final two runs in a 7-6 victory.
X-rays were negative, manager Kirk Gibson said, but Upton was held out of the lineup after taking a few swings in the batting cage.
“It’s still sore. He went in and took some swings and didn’t feel comfortable with it. Hopefully he’ll be ready tomorrow,” Gibson said.
“It didn’t look like it was anything that anybody would notice, but he came in (to the dugout) after that. He felt it. It swelled up a bit. We’ll try to get the swelling out of it.”
Gerardo Parra started in right field in place of Upton.
