“We had a great start offensively, but defensively, we still weren’t there,” head coach Niya Butts said. “We didn’t close the game out. We didn’t rebound the ball well, and they came up with a couple of offensive rebounds in a row. We just didn’t respond to it. I think we made this harder than it had to be. We had a lot of careless turnovers and a lot of travels. You just can’t do that on the road.”
The Cats shot 42 percent from the field (21 for 50), 52.9 percent from 3-point range (9 for 17) and 100 percent from the free-throw line (8 for 8). Arizona gave up 20 turnovers, leading to 13 CU points. UA lost the rebounding battle 41-27, with Colorado pulling down 20 offensive rebounds and picking up 21 second-chance points.
Arizona’s starting five featured Arnold, freshman guard Erin Butler, freshman center Aley Rohde, senior guard Reiko Thomas and Whyte. Warthen had the most minutes off the bench with 29.
For Colorado, junior guard Chucky Jeffery led all scorers with 21 points while going 8 for 16 from the field and 5 for 9 from 3-point range. The Buffs shot 41.8 percent from the field (28 for 67), 32 percent from behind the arc (8 for 25) and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (5 for 7).
