As the month of September begins and major league rosters expand, the Twins made a pair of roster moves Saturday. Minnesota reinstated starting pitcher P.J. Walters from the 60-day disabled list and also selected the contract of pitcher Esmerling Vasquez.
Walters had a lengthy stint on the disabled list after enduring right shoulder inflammation in mid-June. The right-handed starter missed 70 games due to the injury. Walters made 14 starts with Triple-A Rochester this season, going 3-3 with a 4.01 ERA for the Red Wings.
Prior to his shoulder injury, Walters made seven starts for the Twins, going 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA.
Vasquez had appeared in 31 games for Rochester this season, including eight starts. He went 9-6 with a 2.78 ERA with the Red Wings, producing 98 strikeouts. Vasquez, who was claimed off waivers from Arizona last September, is scheduled to start Sunday for the Twins in Kansas City.
With the addition of Walters and Vasquez the Twins now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
