Twins call up OF Grossman, option Rosario to Triple-A
The Minnesota Twins have called up recently signed outfielder Robbie Grossman from Triple-A Rochester and designated Eddie Rosario for assignment.
The 26-year-old Grossman, a switch-hitter, has a .240 batting average, 11 home runs and 63 RBI in 666 major-league at-bats over three seasons, all with the Houston Astros. Grossman was a 2008 draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates and was traded to the Astros in 2012. He played for Houston from 2013-15, though appeared in just 24 games in 2015.
The Astros released Grossman this past November, and he signed with the Cleveland Indians in December. Grossman did not make the Indians' roster out of spring training and spent a month with their Triple-A affiliate, Columbus, before his release on Monday. The Twins signed Grossman the next day, and he played one game in Rochester, going 1 for 4.
Rosario, 24, was batting .209 in 115 at-bats this season, including just .182 with 18 strikeouts in his past 17 games. His demotion comes after a rookie season in which he had 46 extra-base hits in 453 at-bats and finished sixth in American League Rookie of the Year voting.
Grossman will be in a Twins uniform Thursday when they play the Toronto Blue Jays at Target Field. Catch the action on FOX Sports North starting with Twins Live at 6:30 p.m.
