MINNEAPOLIS — Wednesday's game at Target Field between the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels has been postponed due to rain.
The Twins and Angels both have the day off Thursday, but forecasts for a potential makeup game that day don't look promising. Minnesota won the first two games of the series but will now have to wait to try for the three-game sweep whenever the last game is scheduled. The Angels were not slated to come back to Target Field again this season, so the two teams will have to find a common off day later in the year.
This is the second postponement at Target Field in the last four days. Sunday's game against the New York Mets was also postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up on Aug. 19. The Twins have now had seven postponed games and eight delays since Target Field opened in 2010.
"We looked, and everybody wanted to try to figure out a way to play this but it's just not conducive," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said after Wednesday's game was postponed. "It's just going to do that rain all night long. A mist, at least, a heavy mist all through the night, and tomorrow there's no chance either. So we just have to (bag) it and we'll make it up later."
Gardenhire said he'll push back his rotation and keep the order the same. That means right-hander Vance Worley, who was scheduled to pitch Wednesday, will now pitch in the series opener Friday against the Chicago White Sox. He'll be followed by left-hander Scott Diamond on Saturday and righty Kevin Correia in Sunday's series finale. Mike Pelfrey and Pedro Hernandez are slated to pitch in the two-game series against the Marlins next Monday and Tuesday.
Including Sunday's postponed game, the Twins now have three off days in a span of five days before playing again on Friday in Chicago. Gardenhire said that's not necessarily a good thing.
"It's never really good to have that many off days, especially because when you end up (bagging) games this time you're going to play a lot of games in a row later," he said. "But really, you can't fight this weather. It is what it is. Hopefully we'll be playing games in better weather later, so that's a good thing."
