Today is the first of the NFL's two cut days. In most cases, it's the generally quiet and less-than-notable cut day.
Teams carry 80 players on their training camp rosters and must cut to 75 by this afternoon. Most of these cuts are guys who had little chance to make the team even with a preseason game left to go. There's also a lot of placing players on injured-reserve or PUP to keep as many fresh and healthy bodies available for Thursday night's preseason finales, when starters rarely play past the first quarter (if at all).
Sometimes veteran players are cut today as a courtesy, so that they have more time to find another spot with the real cut, to the regular-season roster size of 53, due Saturday. But most of the time the guys cut today are undrafted rookies or losers of positional battles at long snapper or kicker. The Bengals had their roster trimmed to 75 yesterday; some teams are still finalizing things this afternoon.
Per reports, the Browns' first move was waiving DB and Columbus native John Bowie. The team hasn't made any official release or statement. The Steelers waived five players, linebacker Brandon Renkart, cornerback David Pittman, fullback Dwayne Wright and guard Adrian Jones, and placed rookie guard Chris Scott on PUP.
