DOHA, Qatar (AP) Triple jump world champion Teddy Tamgho was set for surgery in Qatar on Saturday and is a big doubt to defend his title in August after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the season-opening Diamond League meet.
The Frenchman described his injury on Twitter after pulling up clutching his foot in the competition in Doha on Friday. He said surgery would be at the Aspetar sports clinic. Tamgho is unlikely to recover in time for the worlds in Beijing.
The injury saw him miss one of the best triple jump events ever. Pedro Pablo Pichardo won with 18.06 meters, the third best jump in history and the best in 19 years. That beat Christian Taylor's 18.04 as two men went over 18 meters in the same competition for the first time.
