Torii Hunter Jr. wanted to see what Notre Dame was like on a game day, so he traveled there for a visit this weekend.
He found it perfect, so prior to leaving campus he decided to end his recruitment.
"Yes, I committed," said Hunter, a receiver at Prosper (Texas) High. "I wanted to see the game day atmosphere and I experienced, and it was awesome. They have fan support for the team, win or lose. The Notre Dame network is worldwide."
Hunter will head to Notre Dame to play receiver, and also follow in the footsteps of his major league baseball-playing father, Torii Hunter.
But more than the athletics, Hunter was attracted to the degree Notre Dame offers. "Being an athlete, they're going to make sure you do what you have to do to graduate," he said. "That's big for me to have a degree from Notre Dame. That's big."
Hunter was hosted by freshman receiver Justin Ferguson, and the two got along well.
"The last time I came up (in the summer) I talked with him and got to met him and he was on the campus, and I got to meet up with him again," Hunter said. "It was pretty fun. We got to meet all the football players, and a lot of students were trying to get me to go."
Hunter chuckled at the notion those students were successful in getting him to commit, and he is excited to fit into the offense.
"I'll be replacing one of the two receivers that are graduating," said Hunter, who watched the offense closely in the win against Michigan. "They move it well. They had a fresh quarterback (Everrett Golson) and he made some mistakes, but he did all right."
The 6-foot, 175-pound has proven to be a Hunter big-play threat in the early going at Prosper. He has 16 catches for 331 yards and four touchdowns this season, and Friday had six catches for 150 yards and a score in a 57-0 win against Mansfield (Texas) Lake Ridge.
And while Hunter wasn't 100 percent he would commit before the visit, he couldn't resist during a meeting with the staff and then coach Brian Kelly on Sunday.
"I was in a meeting and I was talking to the coaches and I told them I felt like this was the place, and they just all were excited," Hunter said. "I got to talk to coach Kelly by myself. He was excited. He kind of had an idea that he thought I thought this was the place."
Hunter was planning a visit to Nebraska and was also talking to several other schools, but said his recruitment is over and he will not make any more visits.
"This is it," he said.
