Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo said Wednesday that he will restructure his deal in the near future to help the club obtain more salary cap wiggle room.
"I'll probably do the restructure here shortly," Romo said on Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio Wednesday. "As far as the pay cut, I mean, I don't think that's a big deal if they ever come ask me for that."
Hours before Romo's comments, the Cowboys inked linebacker Rolando McClain to a one-year deal worth $3 million in base salary and $1 million in incentives. The club also has interest in re-signing defensive end Anthony Spencer, and the desire to lock up receiver Dez Bryant and avoid paying $12.823 million in July. The team must also sign its draft picks before training camp so the rookies can participate.
Taking a restructure is not uncommon for the undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois. Romo admitted in the past to being willing to rework his deal so the front office could afford a key free agent.
"I walked into Jerry and Stephen's office five years ago when I thought we had a chance at getting a defensive player at the time," Romo said. "I told them I would take a pay cut for that, because I thought we needed that as a team."
On Tuesday, Romo told Ben & Skin on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) in Dallas he would have done the same thing to keep free-agent running back DeMarco Murray, who ultimately signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
"DeMarco ended up asking me, 'Why don't you take a pay cut?' I was like, 'I will. I will take a pay cut to go do this.' I was like, 'They're going to restructure me and the whole thing,' that's the same thing in some ways just for salary-cap purposes. He was like, 'OK, now we're back to being friends.' 'You're really worried about me? I would take $5 million less if it meant getting you back'. He knew that."
On Wednesday, Romo later clarified his remarks.
"With the DeMarco situation, and my point on my story there was, DeMarco was asking me, 'Well, why don't you take a pay cut.' And I was like, 'I would take a pay cut.' The funny thing is players think that's the reason. You know, you can restructure and get under the cap and get money. That's not that difficult for teams to do.
"The problem comes in when you end up having five or six guys get a lot all in the same year. They're all making that big amount all at the same time. We're lucky enough not to have that right now. So, I think for me personally the money aspect is stuff you can move around pretty easily."
