SYDNEY (AP) Todd Greenberg has been named as the new chief executive officer of the National Rugby League, five months after Dave Smith announced his retirement from the position.
Greenberg was head of football under Smith, a former banking executive with no previous ties to rugby league. Smith had been in the NRL position for three years.
A former chief executive for the Canterbury Bulldogs, Greenberg moved to NRL headquarters in 2013.
The Australian Rugby League Commission announced in October a ''global search'' for Smith's replacement and interviewed 30 candidates. But it announced Friday that the new CEO would be Greenberg, who has an office one floor beneath the one formerly occupied by Smith.
