Tire Pros Team of the Week: Mountain Pointe
The Mountain Pointe Pride got the high school football season off to a rollicking start on Friday night with a 28-21 victory over Nevada state champ Bishop Gorman in the nationally televised Sollenberger Classic.
The victory at Fertitta Field over a team ranked 25th nationally by MaxPreps earned Mountain Pointe the inaugural Tire Pros High School Team of the Week distinction for 2013.
Their were plenty of big performances to go around for the Pride, which dominated with a running game that piled up 330 yards on 40 carries. Wesley Payne ran 21 times for 173 yards, and junior Paul Lucas had eight carries for 144, including a pair of touchdown runs.
“In the first half they thought we were going to run wide and throw a little, but we had to give them a little Southern hospitality and show them we could pick up the tough yards by running right at them,” Mountain Pointe coach Norris Vaughan told the Ahwatukee Foothills News.
Other teams receiving consideration were Tucson Salpointe, Queen Creek, Gilbert Campo Verde and Tucson Ironwood Ridge.
