Tire Pros Team of the Week: Chaparral
The Chaparral Firebirds are this week's Tire Pros High School Team of the
Week after their 35-28 come-from-behind victory over Desert Mountain on Friday
night.
The Firebirds, No. 4 in this week's Varsity Xtra Division II rankings, trailed 28-0 early in the second quarter before rallying for 35 unanswered points to improve their season record to 3-1. Desert Mountain, which fell to 2-2, is now ranked No. 9 in Division I.
“You can’t really describe a win like this,” Chaparral tight end Trevor Wood told the East Valley Tribune. “We came together when things were going against us, and still found a way to play our game.
“It’s a big win for us, especially on the road. Hopefully this kind of night shows that Chaparral football is back.”
Sean Paul Brophy had 302 passing yards for Chaparral, Wood had five catches for 107 yards, Elijah Castro ran for 112 yards, and Devin Magana scored the tying and go-ahead touchdowns on short runs. More importantly, after a rough start, the Chaparral defense shut down the high-powered Wolves' offense, quarterbacked by Texas A&M commit Kyle Allen.
Other teams under consideration were Mountain Pointe, Skyline, Higley, Desert Edge, Red Mountain, Yuma Catholic, Horizon and Basha.
