Timberwolves recall rookie Shabazz Muhammad from D-League

Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said Shabazz Muhammad wouldn't be in the NBA D-League long.

The rookie small forward proved his coach right in particularly short order.

After a quartet of masterful performances, the team has recalled Muhammad from its affiliate squad, the Iowa Energy. The UCLA product and No. 14 overall draft pick averaged 24.5 points on 57.1 percent shooting, 9.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game in four games during the past week.

With president of basketball operations Flip Saunders in attendance, Muhammad notched 26 points on 11 of 19 shooting, pulled down nine boards and had two assists and two steals in Iowa's 135-112 win against Rio Grande Valley on Sunday.

Adelman hasn't been able to find much time for Muhammad, who has appeared in 11 games and hasn't played more than 9 minutes, 39 seconds in any of them. The D-League stint was aimed at refreshing his familiarity with game action and generating some confidence in his scoring abilities.

In the organization's eyes, both were accomplished in the time since his assignment Sunday, Jan. 5.
