Tigers' Verlander to undergo another MRI
Justin Verlander is healing, but the Tigers want to be sure.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus told reporters in Kansas City that when the team goes to Chicago early next week, Verlander will undergo a third MRI on his strained right triceps muscle.
"The MRI is to make sure the fluid is completely out of there," Ausmus said in Kansas City. "With this injury, you may feel pain-free and not realize there is still fluid in the area. Until you get to that very last step (throwing at maximum effort) and it feels sore again."
Before Thursday night's game, Verlander threw very lightly at 60 feet for the second time.
Once the fluid is gone, Verlander will be able to resume a more strenuous throwing program.
Verlander has not pitched this season since coming out of a spring game against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla., on March 27.
In Verlander's absence, Kyle Lobstein has gone 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA in three starts.
