On the day that teams and players who filed for arbitration had to exchange salary figures, the Tigers came to terms with five of them.
Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, fellow right-hander Rick Porcello, centerfielder Austin Jackson, left fielder Andy Dirks and reliever Al Alburquerque all agreed to one-year contracts Friday.
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported that Scherzer's deal was for $15.525 million. Scherzer made $6.725 million last season.
Heyman also said via his Twitter account (@JonHeymanCBS) that the one-year deal with Scherzer did not mean the Tigers would not try to sign him to a multi-year contract.
"Det hopes to lock up miggy & max," Heyman said, also referring to slugger Miguel Cabrera, who has two years left on his contract.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that Porcello, who made $5.1 million last season, will make $8.5 million this season; Jackson, who earned $3.5 million last year, will make $6 million this year; and Dirks, who made $505,000, will make $1.625 million.
Jason Beck of MLB.com reported that the Tigers and Alburquerque also agreed to a one-year deal for $837,500. Alburquerque made $500,000 last season.
That means catcher Alex Avila is the only arbitration-eligible player left to sign a deal.
Today is the deadline for teams and players to offer their proposed salary figures and if a deal is not reached by Feb. 1, arbitrators will choose between the two proposed salary numbers.
Since he came to Detroit in 2002, Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski has not had a player go to arbitration.
