Three Takeaways from the Blue Jackets loss to Ottawa
One: What is it with no-look passes that are so appealing to players? They're pretty when they connect but, more often than not for the Blue Jackets, they miss the mark. String together some simple passes that connect and build from there. Tonight, there were too many passes that missed their intended target leading to an Ottawa rush.
"At times, we try to get too cute with the puck", said head coach Todd Richards.
Two:Target practice. Too many times tonight, open nets were missed or shots sailed wide of the net. Although they tested Ottawa's backup goalie, amassing 33 shots on goal, they need to have those shots find the back of the net.
"We're getting a lot of shots blocked", said Richards, "we're not getting a lot of shots through. Other teams are finding ways to get pucks to the net. We've got to do a better job of getting pucks through."
Three: A 60 minute game has yet to be played by the Blue Jackets. The first and third periods seem to go well, with them getting pucks deep and working a good forecheck on their opponents. The second period is their Achilles heel. They tend to drift away from what works for them. Sitting at 5-9-0, they need to figure this out quickly.
