Thrashers Hire Mike Stothers as Assistant Coach
By Chris Vivlamore
Craig Ramsay turned to another familiar face in Mike Stothers to round out his Thrashers coaching staff.
Stothers coached alongside Ramsay as an assistant in Philadelphia in 2000-02. He joins associate head coach John Torchetti on the Thrashers' staff.
Stothers also has served as a head and assistant coach in the American Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League. He most recently served as head coach of AHL Grand Rapids in 2007-08, leading the Griffins to a 31-41-0 record. He spent the five previous seasons as head coach of the OHL Owen Sound, compiling a 160-134-21-25 record. He was an assistant coach in the AHL with Hersey (1991-96) and Philadelphia (1996-2000).
Stothers appeared in 30 NHL games in his playing career with Philadelphia and Toronto. He was a first-round draft pick (21st overall) of the Flyers in the 1980 draft.
Thrashers general manager Rick Dudley has said the team might hire a goaltender coach to join the staff. However, hiring a consultant to work with goaltenders also remains a possibility.
