ATLANTA (AP) Freshman Townley Haas swam a blistering second leg to help Texas break the NCAA record in the 800-yard freestyle relay and take the early points lead in its title defense in the men's swimming and diving championships.

Haas completed his 200-yard leg in 1 minute, 30.52 seconds - a record for a program that has produced 39 Olympians who've combined for 42 gold medals - to give the Longhorns a big lead. They finished in 6:08.03.

N.C. State was second in 6:09.58, and Florida followed in 6:09.84. Michigan set the previous record of 6:09.85 in 2014.

After the first final of a four-day event at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center, Texas had 40 points. North Carolina State was second at 34, followed by Florida at 32, California at 30, and Georgia at 28.
